Strategic Planning
The Community Board will be responsible for overseeing the strategic planning process at the college, including strategic planning retreats, development of strategic plan documentation, periodic reviews of the status of goals and initiatives identified in the current plan(s), and periodic updates to the community.
Purpose or Scope
Long-term, high-level planning associated with institutional strategies and goals is an universally recognized best practice for nonprofit organizations, and is widely deemed essential for organizational success. The board should own the strategic planning process at the college, and is responsible for ensuring effective implementation of the goals and initiatives developed during strategic planning work. Strategic planning cycles should be medium-to-long term in scope, usually lasting 3-5 years. Strategic planning retreats should be of sufficient length to permit wide-ranging iterative discussion, usually at least one full day. They should be organized in such a way as to permit wide attendance and participation by representatives from as many stakeholder groups as possible, and should be run by a facilitator.
